A WOMAN who was beginning a new life in Scotland fled the country after being raped during her first night out.

The 28-year-old, who moved to Bathgate from Latvia and found work in a bakery, went out clubbing with friends one night last summer.

But when she returned to a flat in Telford Grove, she was attacked by Nigerian national Mike Okah.

Okah, 26, was found guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday of assaulting and raping the woman, which he had denied.

He was also convicted of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

During the trial, the victim told the court that she had moved to England shortly after the attack on July 19 last year.

Okah told detectives that he had come over to Scotland for a holiday and was planning to take in the Commonwealth Games.

After Okah was found guilty, Lady Wise told him: “You have been convicted of two very serious charges.”

The judge deferred sentence for the preparation of a background report on Okah and remanded him in custody.

He was placed on the sex offenders’ register.
