Woman killed on busy road ‘hit by more than one car’

A WOMAN who died while walking on a busy road on the outskirts of Edinburgh may have been hit by more than one vehicle, police have said.

Vanessa Miller, 36, from Clermiston in Edinburgh, was struck on the city-bound carriageway of the A90 just before the South Queensferry turn-off near Cramond, on Tuesday evening.

Lothian and Borders Police are still trying to determine exactly what happened, and have made a fresh appeal for information following the fatal road collision.

They believe the woman had walked from Barnton towards Kirkliston between 6pm and 7.40pm.

Officers said they were now investigating the possibility that Ms Miller, right, was hit by more than one vehicle.

They have appealed for any drivers who may have been on the road and seen a vehicle collide with a pedestrian, as well as any motorists who were on the southbound carriageway of the A90 and who either stopped or saw another vehicle stop, to get in touch.

Inspector David Milne also urged drivers who had been in the area and later discovered damage to their car to contact police urgently.

“It is possible that a driver may be aware that they have struck something or someone on the road, and might only realise they have if they check their vehicle closely for damage,” he said.

“It was a particularly cold stormy night, so people may have thought it was unusual for a woman to be out walking this stretch of road at that time.

“I would appeal for anyone who was on the A90 between 6pm and 7.40pm on Tuesday night and who may have any information about this incident to contact police if they have not already done so to allow us to piece together exactly what has happened in these tragic circumstances.”

Ms Miller was described as being around 5ft 3in, with blonde hair and was wearing a black leather jacket with fur collar, jeans and black boots.

The area where she was found is not commonly used for a crossing point, given the high speed of the traffic emerging from the duel carriageway leading down from the Forth Road Bridge.

Officers closed off the southbound road for around nine hours to allow them to carry out a detailed investigation.

Police have also confirmed that a driver who stopped to help the injured woman was helping with inquiries.
