A WOMAN was caught stealing more than £700 of men’s clothing from a branch of Marks and Spencer, a court has heard.

Janine O’Neill, 28, was caught pinching the items by security guards at the retail chain’s branch at Gyle Shopping Centre in June.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard how O’Neill, of Colwind Avenue, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, had a partner in crime during the incident which took place at 4.40pm on June 9.

The revelation emerged during a hearing in which O’Neill pleaded guilty to a shoplifting charge before Sheriff Paul Arthurson QC.

The court heard that O’Neill – who was with another person at the time of the incident – was seen leaving the store carrying a shopping bag stuffed full of goods. However, security guards didn’t see her carrying the bag when she entered the shop.

They subsequently stopped her and found that she had £797 worth of men’s clothing in her possession.

Sheriff Arthurson deferred sentence on O’Neill for background reports until November 1.
