The former Dundee United man swung in a tantalising deep corner that was turned home by team-mate Pedro Henrique just five minutes after the hosts had fallen behind.

However, it was a pass later in the match that had everyone talking. Out on the right flank, the midfielder saw Henrique making a late run into the penalty box and decided to cut across the ball with his left foot, sending it swerving into the box like a shot as it sailed right onto the Brazilian attacker’s forehead.

This could well have been a winner for Farense but Henrique could only direct his header at goalkeeper Matheus. Farense were made to pay for the wasted chance as Andraz Sporar struck a 91st-minute winner for the visitors.

Gauld, however, was rewarded with the man-of-the-match award – his seventh of the season.
