Scottish independence: Brexit-supporting unionists will never accept the truth even if 80 per cent back Yes – Helen Martin

Once again MSPs have ludicrously had to pledge allegiance to the UK monarchy to enable them to take part in the Scottish Parliament.

There will certainly have been a few crossed fingers, but all must vow or the government can’t operate – until independence is achieved.

Now we still have Tory delusions that there’s no majority for separation in Scotland. Without the list complication in our recent election and just based on constituency votes, we had 47.7 per cent for SNP, which produced 62 seats – the Tories had only five constituencies. In 2019 the Conservatives only made 43.6 per cent in their general election to take charge of the whole UK!

With such a margin of victory, there is no chance that most Scots will accept any prevention of another independence referendum.

Even Professor John Curtice is getting angry with Conservatives who carry on denying reality, insisting Scotland has at least a narrow majority who want to stay in the UK, and claiming Westminster has the power to say Yes or No to independence.

That might have been true back in 2014. But as Curtice explains, Brexit has undermined the former Scottish pro-UK majority.

Promising Scotland billions or suggesting a federal partnership (which no one would believe) is pointless stupidity shared by the likes of Boris Johnson and Gordon Brown.

When we do support an Indyref, and even if the Yes vote was 80 per cent, Brexiteer unionists would still think they were in charge. If they can never accept the truth, the only solutions we could suggest for them is psychiatric treatment or mathematics tuition.
