Giraffe About Town: Colourful and abstract artwork on the Royal Mile reflects essence of the capital’s landscape

Edinburgh Zoo’s Giraffe About Town project, which saw a herd of 42 colourful, life-sized giraffe sculptures emerge onto the city streets last month, continues to dazzle and delight the people of Edinburgh.

The unique art trail will run until August 29, before the majestic mammals are auctioned off in September to raise funds for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS).

For the next month we will introduce you these impressive creatures, their stories and where you can spot them.

This colourful sculpture depicts several capital landmarks including the Nelson Monument, Holyrood Palace and the Royal Mile.

Today, we feature The Streets of Edinburgh, which can be found outside the Scottish Whisky Experience.

This eye-catching, colourful sculpture is inspired by the exquisite architectural landscape of Scotland’s capital.

Taking inspiration from the colours and textures of famous Edinburgh buildings, this impressive sculpture depicts several Capital landmarks including the Nelson Monument, the Scottish National Gallery, Holyrood Palace and the Royal Mile.

Created by Vivien Carolyn Reinert, the artist hopes that her sculpture will encourage viewers to explore the city streets, and appreciate the colours and textures surrounding them.

Eagle-eyed visitors will be able to recognise some of the city’s most admired streets and buildings - from the various shades of browns found in Melville Street and Circus Lane, to the bold colours of Victoria Street.

Vivien said: “There is so much brilliance and artistry encapsulated in Edinburgh’s city landscape and we can all find inspiration and motivation in it if we take a moment to just look.”

Vivien is a multidisciplinary designer and artist who specialises in printed textile and surface pattern design, with a distinctive focus on bold colours and shapes.
