Rangers were scheduled to travel to Edinburgh on Saturday February 25 but their involvement in the Viaplay Cup final the following day at Hampden Park against Celtic, who were due to host Hearts the same weekend, means both league games will have to be held at a later date.

Hibs v Rangers could well be selected for broadcast given the two previous encounters this season have served up nine goals between them but with matches unlikely to be played during European weeks, and the prospect of an international break at the end of March, league chiefs are faced with limited options to get the games played before the split.

As things stand, the matches could be rescheduled for the midweek following the League Cup final – likely to be Wednesday March 1 – or the midweek of April 4/5. The SPFL also has two other top-flight matches to rearrange. Motherwell’s home match against St Mirren, originally fixed for December 17, was called off after Fir Park sustained considerable damage following a spell of sub-zero weather and will now take place on Wednesday February 15.

But as things stand, no new date has been selected for Livingston’s twice-postponed home game against Dundee United. The match was initially called off on December 17 due to a frozen pitch and despite being given the all-clear at 3pm on Wednesday by one official, a frozen goalmouth prompted referee Matthew MacDermid to call it off shortly after 6pm – less than two hours before kick-off.
