EAST Lothian SNP MP George Kerevan has hosted a screening of a film about the 1995 Srebrenica massacre that was produced by Edinburgh-based director Samir Mehanovic.
The award-winning documentary, called The Fog of Srebrenica, tells the stories of survivors of the worst European genocide since the Second World War.
The massacre saw the killing of 8732 Bosnian men and teenage boys.
The screening was held at the House of Commons to mark the 21st anniversary of the massacre.
Mr Kerevan said: “It is of utmost importance that we take the time to commemorate and reflect on the causes and consequences of the tragic events which unfolded at the door of Europe only two decades ago.”
Mr Mehanovic, who escaped Bosnia for the UK in the year of the genocide, grew up in the neighbouring town of Tuzla, and was inspired to make his film after a 2014 visit to the Srebrenica memorial in the mass graveyard at Potocari.
He said: “The film was conceived as a vivid reminder for present and future generations, and, as one of the survivors I interview says, ‘in the hope that this will never, ever happen to anyone again’.”
