Bones unearthed at Edinburgh University halls on Wednesday have been confirmed as human remains.
A Police probe into the grisly discovered has revealed the bones have been there for a considerable length of time.
As investigations continue, officers are now scouring missing person files.
A Police spokesperson said: “Following the discovery of human bones within the grounds of the Pollock Halls residence on Wednesday 26th September, initial analysis has suggested that these items have been in place for a considerable period of time.
“Inquiries are continuing to determine their origin and, as is standard practice, we will review all relevant missing people investigations.”
Forensic teams probed an area in front of Fraser Court accommodation block at Pollock Halls on Dalkeith Road after police were notified of the find on Wednesday afternoon.
A cordon was in place throughout Thursday, with officers and a forensic team remaining on the scene.
A University spokesperson said: “We are working closely with the police and providing them with every assistance in their investigations.”
