A PETITION has been launched to save a rooftop outdoor bar and live music venue on top of Waverley Mall after it was refused permission to set up in time for Christmas.
Malones on the Mall, a pop-up with bar with pizza grill and stage had been a popular city centre venue during the summer and had planned to resurrect the festival fun as part of a pop-up “Village” this winter.
But councillors last week voted 8-3 against the recommendation by city planners to grant permission stating the venue had drawn substantial complaints in the past and it was not in keeping with the local area.
Set within the UNESCO World Heritage Site and New Town Conservation Area, local councillor Joanna Mowatt said granting permission for the corner site proposed for occupation by Malones on the Mall would be a risk the city should not take.
In response, the petition which has already gathered more than 1,200 signatures, says: “After doing everything they were advised by the council to do, to get planning permission, they were still denied it. This is totally unfair on the business and local community who like to meet there and have fun. It’s Christmas soon for goodness sakes. Let’s show our support and hopefully they’ll change their minds!!
“Dear Edinburgh Council. Please rethink your decision and allow this to go ahead. Sincerely Edinburgh and the surrounding community who spend money in the city!!
Please sign and share with your friends!!”
