Elderly woman dies after collision with bin lorry in Edinburgh

A 90-year-old woman has died following a horror incident involving a bin lorry in the East end of the city, police have confirmed.

Police and Ambulance crews attended the incident, but the woman died at the scene.

The woman suffered fatal injuries following a collision with a Biffa waste truck near the Morrisons supermarket on Piersfield Terrace at around 11:30am on Friday morning.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said it appeared the woman had been hit by at least one commercial vehicle.

At least one other person required treatment after emergency services - including at least a dozen police cars - rushed to the scene.

Fire and ambulance crews were also in attendance, but the woman was tragically confirmed dead at the scene.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses and are asking anyone who can help with ongoing inquires to come forward.

Sergeant Ross Drummond from Police Scotland’s road policing unit said: “This collision has resulted in the death of a woman and our thoughts and condolences are with her friends and family at this difficult time.

“Our inquiries into the full circumstances of the collision are ongoing and I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision, and has not yet spoken to officers, comes forward to assist with our investigations.

“Equally anyone with any information relevant to the inquiry is asked to contact us as soon as possible.”

A spokesman for Biffa added: “Biffa are providing all necessary support to the Police following a road traffic incident in Edinburgh on Friday morning.”

“Our thoughts are with all parties involved or affected at this time.”
