Storm Ali: Paramedics called to damaged Topshop on Princes Street

Paramedics were called to Topshop on Princes Street after masonry was dislodged in high storm winds.

Medical staff are believed to have entered the retail outlet on Edinburgh’s busy shopping thoroughfare soon after 12:30pm as Storm Ali continues to wreak havoc across the Capital.

The extent of any injuries is not yet known.

A witness at the scene confirmed at least one section of masonry had come loose as wind gusts of up to 90mph batter Edinburgh.

Police had cordoned off the section of Princes Street outside of Topshop.

Superintendent Richard Thomas posted on Twitter: “Best to avoid Princess Street [sic] and areas around the Tron, High Street, where roads closures are in place due to loose masonry. Stay safe!”

Princes Street reopened just before 4pm after earlier being shut at South St Andrew Street.

Trams are also again running along the full route to York Place after earlier being restricted to travelling only between the airport and West End Princes Street due to the road closure.

South Bridge has also reopened to traffic.

Police were called to Topshop on Princes Street at 12:30pm.

It is understood a piece of lead is loose on the roof and the precaution has been taken due to the high winds being experienced in the Capital.

Edinburgh City Council is sending an officer down to the Princes Street incident to carry out an inspection on the property.

The Topshop outlet is situated on Princes Street adjacent to the Waverley Mall and one of the main entrances to Edinburgh Waverley station.
