A year after filming the superhero spectacular in the city with his co-director brother Anthony, he returned to reveal 20 minutes of footage more than two weeks ahead of the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles.

Expectation was high in the audience at Cineworld of an exclusive glimpse of the city providing a backdrop for dramatic action sequences.

However Russo warned the packed auditorium in advance that they will have to wait to see their home city on screen.

The filmmaker told last year how he had been “shocked” to discover how few films had used Edinburgh as a backdrop, describing it as “one of the more cinematic cities I’ve seen.”

Introducing the finished footage, he said: “I want to thank Edinburgh for being such an incredible host to my brother and I and our crew. It was an amazing shoot. When you do see the movie you will see about 10 minutes of your beautiful city shot as Edinburgh and there are some pretty important sequences that happen here. I think you’ll recognise a lot of your town. Thank you for being such gracious hosts. The city is very dear to me. I have a daughter who attends school in Scotland and also have a son and nephew here. We love it.”
