Fifty three teams will do battle at the Braids for The Dispatch Trophy, won last year by George Heriots

The number of teams taking part in the Braids tournament had dropped to 42 in 2016 but rose to 46 last year and is now up to 53 for the 119th staging later this month.

New teams taking part include Mortonhall, Kingsfield, the Glen, Dunbar Castle, Johnston Carmichael Wealth and two representing the Lothians Golf Association.

“Having played in the Dispatch Trophy myself a few times for Edinburgh Thistle, it is great to see the entries increase for the second year running,” said Frank O’Donnell, editor of the Edinburgh Evening News.

“This unique event has been part of the Lothians sporting fabric for a long time and it is terrific to see it having been reinvigorated through an association with Edinburgh Leisure and the title sponsor, golfclubs4cash.

“The excitement is starting to build for the 119th staging at the Braids, where George Heriot’s got their hands on the iconic trophy last year for the first time in 38 years and we look forward to another thrilling week.”

This year’s event is the third in association with Edinburgh Leisure and also with Loanhead-based Golfclubs4cash as the title sponsor.

“Edinburgh Leisure is always delighted to host the Dispatch Trophy at the Braids Hills Golf Course and we are confident that, as always, the course will present an excellent backdrop for this historic competition,” said Ken Harvey, Edinburgh Leisure’s head of operations.

“I feel the growth in entries and continued success of this vital competition is testimony to the hard work, dedication and support of everyone involved.

“That, of course, includes all the local clubs throughout the Lothians who continue to support our efforts to secure the future of this competition and golf within the local community.”

A spokesman for Golfclubs4cash said of the latest rise in entries: “That is amazing news!

“It is great to see the number of teams taking part rising over the past couple of years along with new teams entering the tournament.

“It should be another great week up at the Braids.”

The event starts on Saturday, May 19 and concludes the following Saturday. The draw will be made on Monday.
