ENGLAND under-17 400 metres champion Ben Robbins (Edinburgh AC) has set a new UK record of 34.28 secs for the 300 metres in an open meeting at Grangemouth.

Maintaining his fine end-of-season form, Robbins beat the previous Scottish record of Kris Stewart (34.56) and the UK best of 34.40. Lasswade’s Guy Learmonth is another finishing the season in style after he used a British Milers Club meeting at Watford to nail his second 800 metres qualifying time for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. After a wasted trip to Amsterdam last Saturday, when strong winds ruined his chances, Learmonth won in 1:47.34 compared to the required standard of 1:47.50.

“Job done. I’m not satisfied, but my season’s been salvaged,” said the 21-year-old Loughborough University student, who also has a time of 1:47.31 to his credit since the qualifying period opened last April 1, giving him the minimum two standards necessary for selection for Scotland at Hampden next year.
