The Capital star hit the front with one lap left but was just edged out by Renelle Lamote by 32-hundredths of a second in a sprint for the line as the French star landed victory win in 1 minute 59.58 seconds with the European 800m gold medallist, Ukraine’s Nataliya Prishchepka, back in third. Sharp’s fellow Scot Laura Muir suffered her lowest finish since the 2014 Commonwealth Games after ending up a lowly 11th.

Lasswade’s Guy Learmonth came up short in a fiercely-contested men’s 800 metres, finishing sixth in 1:47.04 with Kirsten McAslan second in the 400m hurdles in 57.68 secs.

“It was rough as hell,” Learmonth said. “I’ve not felt right in a couple weeks but that’s just the long season.”
