Josh Kerr sent out a signal of intent for 2018 with victory in his indoor season-opener in the USA.

The 20-year-old, who went out in the first round of last summer’s World Championships in London, failed to earn a spot in Scotland’s squad for the Commonwealth Games after team chiefs ruled he hadn’t landed enough qualifying times.

The Capital prospect roared back into action with a personal best of 1:48.87 to win the 800 metres at the Martin Luther King Invitational in New Mexico.

Fellow prospect Nick Percy – who was barred by the University of Nebraska from going to the Commonwealths – threw a lifetime best of 20.36m to win the hammer event at the Colligan Memorial meeting.
