Maddie Murray of Edinburgh AC has a hard act to follow as she competes for the first time for Great Britain in the European Cross Country Championships in Hyeres, France on Sunday.
Last year, Edinburgh University student Rhona Auckland won the under-23 title when the event was held over a tough snow-covered course in Bulgaria.
Scottish champion Murray joins three other Scots in the team, Steph Twell, Laura Muir and Luke Traynor.
Unlike Auckland, who specialises in long distance and declined selection for the senior team, Murray is a middle-distance racer and much will depend on what kind of course the French have set.
As the venue is in the south of France, near Toulon, hopes will be high for both Muir and Murray that it will be fast, flat and undulating rather than a heavy, muddy “drag”.
Twell goes in the senior race and will compete in her tenth European event. Giffnock’s Traynor is the only Scots male in the team, and competes in the under-23 race.
