The 32-year-old had only accepted the fight last month after Matty Askin, who was due to fight Kennedy at the Motorpoint Arena next Saturday, was forced to call off after suffering an injury to his right hand.

Former Celtic and WBC International Silver champion Simmons last fought in October when he lost out on a split decision to German Noel Gevor in Hamburg but will now take some time off to recuperate.

The show, which was also being broadcast exclusively live by Channel 5, has now been postponed.

“It’s really gutting but I’ll get a crack at it this year I’m sure,” Simmons said. “I started to up my training ahead of next week but I felt a twinge in my back. It’s an old injury from the end of last year. I’ll have to start doing some rehab work instead. I don’t know when I’ll next be out so I’ll speak to my team over the next week or two.”
