Basketball: Kings claim crown for six in a row

Edinburgh KINGS have clinched the Scottish Basketball League for the sixth year in a row, with a game still to play and Glasgow Rocks have won the Scottish Women’s League after narrowly defeating Polonia Phoenix 53-51 in the virtual decider and going on to thrash Falkirk Fury 68-27 at Cumbernauld to wrap things up.

Without injured stars Ed Rekis and Lee Reilly, Kings toiled before coming from 36-26 down to defeat Glasgow Rocks 82-65 at Portobello High School on Saturday.

Looking anything but champions, Kings struggled in the first half against a side who have won only twice this season.

But a surge of second-half points from Paddy Campbell, who had 23, and Craig Reilly, who was top-scorer with 27, took them over the finish line.

Boroughmuir Blaze cruised to an 80-56 home win over Dunfermline Reign on Saturday, Chopper Pettett standing in as player-coach for Simon Turner.

Polonia Phoenix tasted more disappointment when they lost 71-53 to Edinburgh Kool Kats at Wester Hailes, despite leading 34-29 at half-time. Kats then won the third quarter 22-8 and went on to clinch second place in the league.

Honours were even in the age group derbies between the two Capital teams, Polonia winning the junior women’s game 73-52 and Kats the cadette 64-51.
