Basketball: Kool Kats put squeeze on St Mirren in cracking game

This season’s Scottish Women’s basketball league may be small in number, just five teams, but if it continues to provide games of the calibre of Saturday’s Edinburgh Kool Kats v St Mirren encounter at Portobello then few will complain.

This season’s Scottish Women’s basketball league may be small in number, just five teams, but if it continues to provide games of the calibre of Saturday’s Edinburgh Kool Kats v St Mirren encounter at Portobello then few will complain.

Kats found the visiting Saints very much alive and only squeezed home 63-60, a result which both frustrated and encouraged home coach Graham “Ben” Gunn.

“We made heavy weather of that but there should be lots more to come from the likes of Rowan (Bell) and Lauren (Walker) who were short of match practice,” he said.

Sarah Thompson was the pick of the bunch with 19 points, Laura McKinley adding ten.

Kats had big contributions from Sarah O’Brien who had 22, Tracey Phillips a spritely 14, Emma Findlay nine and Nicola McBrierty eight. By contrast Polonia Phoenix mauled an understrength Falkirk Fury 69-29 at the Mariner, Ali Mitchell hitting 27 for Phoenix, whose cadettes beat Fury 54-45, Mirren Summers capping a fine performance both in offence and defence with 20 points and Keri Jackson adding 17.

Edinburgh Kings continue to cruise along unbeaten in the men’s league almost repeating their opening score at Portobello in toppling Stirling Knights 88-54 at the Peak Centre on Saturday night. Ed Rekis keeps stacking up the points with another 25 as Kings moved from 25-11 up after the first quarter to a half-time lead of 43-28.

Boroughmuir Blaze showed a slight improvement in their return home game against St Mirren, going down 88-57.
