Basketball: Portobello High ready for another Super Saturday

Portobello High School Games Hall will stage another “Super Saturday” this weekend with five national league games taking place there tomorrow.

The first is at 11am, while the grand finale at 7pm features the Scottish Women’s League return clash between hosts Edinburgh Kool Kats and their close rivals, unbeaten leaders Polonia Phoenix.

In their first encounter of the season at the Crags last month, Phoenix came from eight points down at the start to win 41-40 winners by virtue of scoring the last eight points. That was Kats’ only defeat so far this season.

In looking for revenge, they will be helped by the return of Tracey Phillips, who had a wasted journey to New York last week for the Marathon which did not take place, and Nicola McBrierty, who will be keen to bow out on a winning note as she leaves next week for Dubai where she is taking up a permanent PE post at an international school.

The junior men’s game at 1pm between Edinburgh Kings and Tayside Musketeers is another which could have a vital bearing on the destination of the title with the experienced Arbroath side unbeaten so far.

Kings have shown distinct improvement since they lost a shocker at home to Dunfermline Reign, their only defeat of the campaign.

The cadet men’s game between the same two clubs starts the action at 11am and the Kats junior women follow the junior men at 3pm bidding for first blood in the club’s triple-header with Polonia.

The cadette women’s game which follows at 5pm has added interest after Kats’ upset 60-57 home win over Highland Bears.
