Basketball: Sport mourns Duff

Scottish basketball has been shocked by the sudden death at the age of only 44 of Stevie Duff, the former East Lothian basketball and disabled sport development officer who only a few months ago was appointed “Head of Basketball” at BasketballScotland HQ in Edinburgh.

A former MIM and Scotland junior player who went to High School in the United States at an early age, Duff returned to Scotland when he incurred a serious knee injury which effectively ended his playing career. He went on to play and coach wheelchair basketball making a major contribution to the development of that sport in Scotland through his work with Lothian Phoenix and attending the 2008 Beijing Olympics as assistant coach to the GB men’s team. While working for East Lothian he was also largely instrumental in the setting up of the East Lothian Peregrines men’s national league team.

Andy McSweeney, Head of Operations at BasketballScotland said: “Stevie demonstrated his passionate belief that we could create better opportunities for everyone involved in the game in Scotland.” Duff is survived by his wife Shirley-Anne and three children.
