Captain Jenny Simpson scored the winning basket in her last-ever game as Queen Margaret University beat Edinburgh University Seconds 72-55 in the women’s final of the Scottish Universities Conference Cup at Dundee University.
With the rampant Christina Newton scoring 31 points and her fellow Irish star Shona O’Connor adding 20, Queen Margaret gradually pulled away from a 34-31 half-time lead.
Simpson, whose younger sister Kirsten took on the ball-handling duties, added nine points while Edinburgh’s Mirren Summers scored 22, including five three-pointers.
In the men’s final, Heriot-Watt University lost 60-55 to Robert Gordon University, of Aberdeen, despite mounting a spirited fightback in the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, Edinburgh women will play Glasgow in the final of the Premier North play-offs at the Pleasance on April 9.
