Helped by three superb performances by Capital trio Malcolm Winning, Findlay Wood and Gregor Gray, Scotland grabbed their first win in the European Junior Men’s Basketball Championships when they shocked Ireland 70-59 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

It was also their first win in two visits to the championships and was even more remarkable as they trailed 17-4 after the first quarter.

But a fighting second quarter which they took 21-9 put them back in contention and they edged ahead in the third before a decisive 28-18 final ten minutes. Winning (Boroughmuir Blaze) at last found his touch, and he top-scored with 23 points, including five from six from beyond the three-point line and eight from eight free throws.

Captain Fraser Malcolm (Falkirk Fury) was again in double figures with 22 points, while Wood (Edinburgh Kings) had 14 points and ten rebounds and former clubmate Gray (North Berwick) 11.

“We didn’t turn up defensively in the first quarter and didn’t execute the game plan and we spent most of the second clawing things back but the boys were superb in the third and fourth quarters,” said coach Doug Reilly.
