Edinburgh University men are through to the final of the British Universities Basketball Trophy after a 89-84 victory over Derby in their semi-final.
Without leading scorer centre Jac St John and facing a side with several professional players at the Pleasance last night, Edinburgh had their backs to the wall for much of the game. However, they produced a telling surge with four minutes left to open a small gap and then held off the visitors’ final assault.
Edinburgh led 39-30 in the second quarter, but Derby fought back to edge ahead 46-42 at half-time, led by impressive captain Dan Wats.
Edinburgh had outstanding contributions from Gert Marisalu, who scored 23, 11 from the free throw line, Cyril Wealer, who had 21 including three three-pointers, Davey Rowan 14, including four three-pointers, Ben Warrington 13 and Greg Fousas 11.
Edinburgh now play Northampton in the final at Surrey Sports Park on Tuesday, March 25.
Edinburgh women play Northumbria in the quarter-finals of the Final Eights at the University of East London on Saturday.
