Scottish women’s champions Polonia Phoenix came close to their first win of the season, losing 62-54 to Edinburgh Kool Kats in the Scottish League at Portobello High School at the weekend.

Edinburgh University student Beth Mackie led all scorers with 20 points while Cathy Mitchell added 15 points. However, a strong finish by Kats – Rose Anderson with 16 points and Lauren Walker adding 13 – was enough to hold off their rivals. Leane Paige with eight was also in fine form for Kats.

After a dour first half, back-to-back threes from Mackie and Mitchell put Phoenix level on 31-31 and Hilary Wood put them 44-42 up after the third, but Kats outscored them 17-4 in the last five minutes.

Edinburgh Kings also had a sluggish start before breaking out to beat Stirling Knights 75-51, Greek guard Menelaos Kokolios scoring 19 points, Simon Flockhart 17 and Matt Kruczynski 16.

Kings shaded the first quarter 21-20, were 38-32 up at half-time and took firm control in the third which they won 14-6.

“We were a bit slow off the mark defensively, but we picked it up in the second quarter and the second half was much better,” said coach Doug Reilly, who gave a chance to two juniors Sam McArthur and Doug Leslie.

The City of Edinburgh club completed five wins out of five on Super Saturday, with the cadette women beating Polonia 67-52, the cadet men beating Highland Bears 72-65, the junior men also beating Bears 78-67 and the junior women 50-27 winners over Phoenix.

Boroughmuir Blaze got back on the winning track with two home wins at the Crags, a 70-52 senior success over Dunfermline Reign and a 96-45 junior win. However, The Reign cadets showed that their recent win over Kings at Portobello was no fluke as they won their under-16 encounter 82-65.
