Two Edinburgh Kool Kats, Hannah Peacock and Kirsten Simpson, are among four Scots named by coach Karen Burton in the final 12 to represent Great Britain in the European Under-20 Basketball Championships in Podgorica, Montenegro beginning tomorrow.
eacock, who just missed selection for the final 12 for the GB senior team at Eurobasket in Hungary earlier this month, has already played for the GB Under-20s and will be one of the players new coach Burton will be relying on to try and take GB up a level to the A division.
Simpson’s selection is a welcome surprise though she recently represented Scotland at senior level in Luxembourg and has obviously impressed Burton with her work ethic at the GB training camp.
Scotland and Kool Kats coach Graham Gunn commented: “I’m delighted that Kirsten, having won her first senior Scottish caps in Luxembourg, has now gone on to earn her place in the GB under-20 side and I’m also delighted that Hannah will be getting some competitive action having missed out on the Scotland games due to the GB senior squad training.”
The other Scots in the team are both students based in England – Robyn Lewis, who plays for Loughborough and the Leicester Riders in the WBBL, and Sarah Thomson, who plays for Team Northumbria.
GB face a daunting schedule of nine games in 11 days in the round-robin tournament, opening against Israel tomorrow then playing Austria on Friday and Greece on Saturday.
After a rest on Sunday, they play face Montenegro, Sweden and Bulgaria, followed after another rest day by Lithuania, Bosnia and Romania.
