SCOTLAND captain and Rocks basketball player Gareth Murray has been added to the Great Britain men’s squad for the Eurobasket Championships in Slovenia later this month.
The former Arbroath Musketeers guard-forward, who has been brought in to replace the injured Ashley Hamilton, will make his GB debut in the friendly international against Puerto Rico at the Copper Box in London a week tomorrow. That takes the Scottish representation in the squad up to three with Murray, a full-time professional with the Glasgow Rocks, joining former Falkirk Fury player Kieron Achara and Canadian-reared Alex Marcotullio.
Another Falkirk player Ali Fraser, who like Achara and Murray, was in the Scottish team who beat England in two friendlies in Scotland recently, has been called up for a trial by American coach Joe Prunty, with the possibility of being added to the squad.
Murray has been recognised as one of the best home-grown players in the British league.
Scotland coach Iain Maclean strongly endorsed his selection: “I’ve been surprised he hasn’t been included before.”
