Great Britain’s bid to reach the quarter-finals of the EuroBasket Women was dealt another blow following a 66-55 defeat to Czech Republic in Vendee, France.
Johanna Leedham led the way with 20 points added to eight rebounds and six assists but Team GB were undone at the defensive end. Scot Rose Anderson had just two minutes of game time. The Czech Republic were on fire from long-range, hitting nine three-pointers, with Michaela Zrustova enjoying a 20-point haul.
“Number five (Zrustova) had a field day on us,” Leedham said. “I don’t know what her shooting percentage from beyond the arc was but that was tough.”
Despite defeat in this game, their opening Group F match of the second round, Team GB still have a chance of making the last eight. They currently sit in the last remaining qualification place and face Belarus tomorrow and then Croatia in their final two games.
Belarus went down 55-48 to Serbia while Croatia were beaten 78-70 yesterday.
“We have two more opportunities in this second round,” head coach Damian Jennings said. “We are not just here as tourists.”
