There is no doubting that Lithuanian Tomas Cicenas is a clutch basketball player and never more so than when he rescued Boroughmuir Blaze from a deep hole against Edinburgh Kings in their first Scottish League derby of the season to give them a 75-74 win at the Crags.
Blaze were down by as much as 15 points in the third quarter with Cicenas and his fellow go-to player Eoghan Dover both out of sorts and a mainly young Kings team apparently in full control.
But Kings’ errors started to creep in and their shooting went off the boil.
As the final minute approached, the gap was down to single figures and a full court press by Blaze started to pay off.
After a Dover basket, Cicenas reeled off nine points in a row, finishing with two three-pointers, the first under pressure from the top of the key and the second, from the side, going in off the backboard right on the final buzzer.
Cicenas ended up with 19 points in all, former Kings forward Matt Kruczynski adding 16, Dover 14 and Edgars Damlics 13.
For Kings, captain Craig Reilly had 23, Paddy Campbell 18, Garreth Lodge 14 and junior Kyle Jimenez nine including a nerveless four from four from the line late on.
