Scotland’s senior women’s basketball team got their European Small Countries Championship campaign off to a winning start by beating Azerbaijan 66-56 in their first group game in St Polten, Austria, last night.

Former Edinburgh Kool Kats guard Becca Allison had a stand-out game with 15 points, nine rebounds and a steal for a plus 19 rating for her contribution of nearly 28 minutes.

Glasgow Rocks guard Rhona Corkindale led the scoring with 17 points while former Falkirk favourite Gillian Baird (Loughborough) added 13 points, eight rebounds, two steals and a block for a plus 23 rating.

Scotland moved clear from a 27-27 half-time tie with a 25-7 third quarter and coach Graham “Ben” Gunn was able to give his entire bench a run in preparation for the games to come.

A win over Wales today would guarantee Scotland a place in the semi-finals before they play Austria tomorrow.

The hosts beat Wales 82-24 while tournament favourites Iceland beat Malta 85-46 in their first game in the other group.

Great Britain’s men’s under-20s lost 75-52 to Slovenia in their first game of the European Championship A section second round in Crete. North Berwick’s Grant Mackay was second top scorer with 11 points.
