Bird and Inverleith have done homework on Menzieshill

CHRIS BIRD scored his first goal for the senior Inverleith hockey side in four years last weekend and is thoroughly enjoying his second spell with the club.

The forward was one of a number of players who stayed behind after last Saturday’s victory over Clydesdale to watch tomorrow’s opponents Grove Menzieshill let slip a 3-1 lead against a Grange side who took the points in a 4-3 win thanks to a goal from Scottish international Cammy Fraser.

Inverleith will have to beware the Tayside team and coach Steve McCurry is under no illusions as to what lies ahead.

The Peffermill-based team have an unblemished two-game record and sit in second spot in the table of ten with six points, the same as leaders Kelburne who have a better goal difference.

McCurry has a full squad at his disposal as Phil Hall comes back into the frame after a two-match ban and the coach, who has also played and coached Menzieshill, said: “They are a well-structured side. We fully expect tomorrow to be a tough game.”

Edinburgh University host Clydesdale and coach Graham Moodie spent last weekend spying on several teams who were playing in the Capital, including Clydesdale. The loss of highly-rated goalkeeper David Forrester through suspension is a blow but Moodie’s men are raring to go after working hard in pre-season.

Fourth-placed Grange travel to bottom club Dundee Wanderers looking to build on last weekend’s victory. Also on the road are newly-promoted CALA Edinburgh, who sit in second last spot having lost their first two games. They visit Hillhead who are seventh but could have midfielder Scott Sutherland back after missing last Saturday’s home defeat by Western.
