Bowls: Bainfield lady bowlers suffer a sorry day in East Lothian

The ladies’ team of Bainfield IBC suffered a torrid time of it on Saturday’s National League Cup visit to their East Lothian counterparts in Section 1C and were never at the races as they crashed to a 110-48 defeat at the Meadowmill stadium.

East Lothian dominated the match from the off and were never headed in a strong team performance that saw them more than have the measure of their Bainfield rivals on all four rinks.

Massive double-figure wins were contributed by the home rinks skipped by Rose McAinsh, Yvonne Veitch and Emma Brown while Janet Fairnie came under late pressure but had plenty in hand to add a
single-figure success.

The phase scoring paints a perplexing picture of Bainfield holding their opponents to a 25-25 share of the third and
final seven-end phase when the home side should have been at their strongest.

But East Lothian had presumably taken their collective foot off the accelerator having killed the match as a competitive event by dominating the first phase 35-15 then exploding their way to a spectacular 50-8 romp on the second.

From the Bainfield perspective it was catastrophic day for former junior cap Kathryn O’Donnell and her rink of Aimee Robertson, Anne Matthew and Susan Allan as they suffered a 34-11 hammering from Rose McAinsh.

O’Donnell and Co failed to register on 16 of the 21 ends and were particularly put through the mill by a crushing run of 3, 3, 5, 2, 2, 3, 3, 1, 2 that added up to the loss of 24 shots over nine ends.

Anne Watson and her front-three of Susan Brown, Sheila Grigor and Isa Wilson only lost the end count 11-10 but their low-scoring efforts were heavily punished by a 27-10 defeat from Yvonne Veitch. The major problem to thwart Watson and Co was the loss of 5, 4, 3, 1, 1, 1 to trail 16-2 after nine ends.

The loss of a mighty 5 at the 12th end saw the rink of Karen Tumblety, Heather Stoddart, Kathleen Barr and Theresa Blair collapse to 18-4 down and they found no way back in a
28-10 defeat from Emma Brown.

Yet another double-figure defeat looked likely for Bainfield when their rink of Janette Crawford, Cathie Falconer, Marion Dickson and Anna Anderson trailed 20-5 to Janet Fairnie after 14 ends. But they staged a terrific fight back of 3, (1), 2, 3, 3, 1 that reduced the extent of their defeat to 21-17.

Bainfield’s record of one win from three games leaves them second bottom with two points to the zero of Tweedbank while Portobello (idle) are undefeated after three games and sit top two points ahead of East Lothian who share the four-point mark with Teviotdale.
