It is been more than 30 years since Whitburn reigned as the top bowling club in West Lothian so it is a welcome success for them that George Fordyce has captured the highly competitive Weslo Housing sponsored Seniors Open Title.
The Seniors section of the sport isn’t exactly mainstream so it doesn’t herald a return to the halcyon days of Scotland caps John Harper and Jim Boyle, the Halliday Brothers Willie and the Cochrane brothers Jim and Willie. to name but a few, but it does represent a good win from a 105-strong field.
Fordyce emerged the star of the final day’s play of The Weslo at the Glenmavis green in Bathgate, having served up winning performances against Ian McGill of East Calder in the semis then David Gemmell of Winchburgh in the final.
McGill set the early pace to lead Fordyce 12-10 but the Whitburn dark horse came hit the front with a perfectly timed run of 2, 3, 3, 1 then went on from 19-12 to clinch a 21-14 victory in 20 ends.
The other semi-final saw Gemmell spring a big surprise with his strong performance sentencing-defending champion Gordon Scott of Armadale a 21-16 exit in 24 ends.
The final saw Fordyce make a brilliant start to race into a 12-2 lead however Gemmell fought back to cross 13-12. But Fordyce arrested his alarming slide with doubles to 14 then added 3, 1, 2 to 20 and answered the loss of a 2 with a single to win 21-15 in 19 ends.
