Last night’s opening action in The Edinburgh Bowling League Knockout Championships, sponsored by ABT Machine Tools, saw Parkside ace Robert Donaldson survive an epic 22-end battle against Stuart Campbell of Tanfield in the Singles at Dean.
Donaldson looked odds on to make a prelim round exit when he trailed 9-1 after six ends, but the tide started to turn with a surge of 1, 2, 3, (1), 2, 1, 1 to stand peels at 10-10 but that sinking feeling returned when Campbell made fresh space to 18-10 with a run of 2, 3, 3.
Donaldson wasn’t ready to be counted out though and counter-punched with a brilliantly judged take-out to card a 4 shot to 14 then excitingly ditched the jack for a 3 to 17 at the next.
Donaldson produced the grandstand finish when answering the loss of a single with a run of 1, 2, 1 to win 21-19.
The Pairs tie at Dean saw Aaron Morrison and Darren McKenny of Pilrig include two counts of 4 in a 12-1 lead over Jim Fisher and Bill Ramsay of Mayfield but they were put under pressure at 16-14, but held out to win 19-15.
Paul Kirkland of Queensberry was the Singles victor at Braid, where he beat Graham Flight of Dudley 21-16, while Whitehouse & Grange trio John Wright, Fraser Milligan and Callum Weir enjoyed a 13-4 win over Corstorphine’s Frank Ross, Dougie Wilson and Tom Mitchell in the Triples.
