East Lothian’s 2014 winning trio of Yvonne Veitch, Margaret Thomson and Emma Logan (nee Brown) made a shock second-round exit to Glasgow in qualifying for this year’s Scottish Indoor Bowls Triples Championship.

Glasgow’s Margaret McElview, Chris Holland and June Marshall had started at Blantyre with 17-12 and 16-11 wins over Cowal and Abbeyview respectively.

Meanwhile, EL were surviving a 24-22 prelim-round thriller against Headwell (Dunfermline) before beating Auchinleck trio Sandra Wallace, Claire Johnston and Jean Sykes 17-15.

Lanarkshire IBC was the venue for the next day’s second-round play where the East Lothian trio suffered a crushing 22-5 defeat by their Glasgow opponents, who then lost 14-11 to Violet Smith, Alison Bradford and Pat Johnstone of Falkirk in the section final.

Midlothian trio Gaynor Duncan, Jeanette Conlan and Sandra McLeish were beaten 16-11 by Abbeyview in the prelim round.

Meanwhile, the action at Midlothian IBC saw Balbardie bring in Delia Flannigan – replacing absent international star Lorraine Malloy – to line up in the middle between Kim Ross and Sharon Leitch.

They had a bye into the first-round proper where they defeated East Fife’s Havanna Clark, Karen McAndrew and Celia Smith 22-15, setting up a clash with Margaret Aitken, Marie Todd and Lauren Upton of Tweedbank. Balbardie progressed into the second round after beating their Borders challengers 26-23.

The section final came against the young Dumbarton trio of Byrony Thomson, Emma McIntyre and Michelle Keegan, who had on the way dealt a 25-9 prelim-round exit to Bainfield and beat West Lothian 17-14 in the second round. Dumbarton added Balbardie to their list of victims with a 20-16 win.

The semi-finals line-up at Falkirk on Saturday, April 2 is: Falkirk v Dumbarton; Coatbridge v Arbroath.
