Edinburgh & LEITH have qualified for the knockout stage of bowls’ Scottish Under-25 League Cup, having clinched the East section honours with a 24¾ shots win over Borders at West End BC.
Wins on four rinks – skipped Neil Watson, Stephen Pringle, Daniel Gormley and Jamie Reid – stamped the home side’s authority on a must-win match but Borders did make winning impressions against Ross Noble and Josh Spalding.
Noble was on the end of a 13-4 tanking over the first seven-end phase of the match, but E&L fought back to show 43-37 up on the major scoreboard, then dominated the second phase 52-31, before losing 42-49 ground on the third.
Watson was the main contributor with a run of 3, 1, 5, 4 as he skipped Steven Rennie, Murray Baillie and Dean McNeil to a 30-19 win over J Mitchell. (30-14¼ on a penalty adjustment).
Pringle skipped Jamie Ronaldson, Ewan Martin and Colin Tough to a 2-12 win over R Taylor, while a super six at end 16 helped Reid skip Dean Mackintosh, Robert Ewing and Kerr McKail to a 28-18 win over M Fairley.
Gormley had an exciting run of 4, 4, 1, 4, 1 to lead 21-5, then skipped Mark McIntosh, Donald Forsyth and Liam McKay to a 27-17 win over S Clarkson.
Spalding was piped 20-19 by R Neil, while Noble crashed to a 31-14 defeat from B McGregor.
E&L face Renfrewshire in the semi-final at Houldsworth (Wishaw) on Sunday, June 29. The other semi features Grampian against Lanarkshire.
