Daniel Gormley of Craigentinny fought off a strong challenge from Kerr McKail of Summerside to retain his Junior Singles crown in the Finals of the Edinburgh Bowling League Knockout Championships sponsored by Buyrite Bathrooms.
Their clash at Queensberry was eagerly anticipated as McKail’s record of achievement includes winning the E&L Under 25’s Fleming Trophy in 2012 while Gormley has Junior international experience. Gormley powered to an impressive 21-13 victory in 23 ends.
The final of the Pairs saw the Carrick Knowe name etched on the silverware for the first time with the partnership of Andy Blair and John Ramsay producing a flying finish from 9-5 down to inflict 17-12 pain on Maitland brothers George and Alan Trotter.
Carrick Knowe were also seeking a first in the Triples but their trio of John Mitchell, Cameron tenant and Kevin Tennant were unable to get to grips with their Hillside opposition of Phil Harper, Stuart Cormack and Brian Irving.
Irving, perhaps inspired by historical title wins for Hillside in 2006 and 2008, made a super-charged start to lead 14-5 then traded on his cushion to skip his front-two to a 15-10 victory.
Parkside were seeking to capture the Fours title for a record extending fifth time but were frustrated by a Northern rink whose 18-14 win added to previous triumphs in 2002 and 2015.
Roy Campbell was the man at the helm skipping Larry Sorrell, Alec Young and Grant Young from 9-5 down to 12-9 up with counts of 1, 1, 5 then making space from 12-11 to 18-11 and capturing the title at the expense of Brian Salvona, Willie Watson, Colin Hairs and Davie Anderson.
Leith and Wardie were both hunting a first ever title triumph in the Seniors Fours and it was Ian Ramsay who lifted the trophy, skipping his Leith front-three of Willie Gilbertson, Davy Morris and George Wood to an 18-8 win over Frank Clelland, Dave King, Stan McBain and Stuart Lawrie.
