The Lothians has strong representation in the final stages of the Scottish Indoor Bowls Championships being staged at the West of Scotland IBC this weekend.
Neil Speirs represents West Lothian IBC in the gents singles, where he will be aiming to improve on his runners-up spot in 2009. Speirs faces a semi-final challenge from dark horse challenger Jason Banks, a junior cap from Garioch, in tomorrow’s 12.30pm session.
The opposite semi-final has a cracking look about it with Midlothian ace Ronnie Duncan sure to have his hands full against Iain McLean of Blantyre, who won the title in 2007 and 2012. Duncan has 18 caps to his name and is a Scottish Champion of Champions runner-up so won’t be daunted at facing one of the title favourites. The Duncan/McLean semi final takes to the carpet on the 3pm session tomorrow while the final is on Sunday at 1pm.
Bainfield partnership John McDermott and Gavin Smith capable of landing the 2Bowl Pairs title if producing their best form. Title success won’t come easy, however, as they face highly-regarded Auchinleck pair Alex Fleming and Stewart Anderson in the semi-final. They take to the carpet at 12.30pm while the earlier semi final at 10am features Derek McNicol and Willie Lumsden of Aberdeen against Darren Coupar and David Taylor of Falkirk. The final is on Sunday at 10am.
Midlothian ace Kelly McDougall will be parading her skills on two fronts – the ladies Junior Singles and the 2Bowl Pairs.
The reigning outdoor junior singles champion opens her bid for the indoor version against defending champion Carrie McLean of Auchinleck in the semi-final (3pm). The contenders in the other semi-final at 10am are Ailsa Robertson of Dundee and Michelle Keenan of Dumbarton.
McDougall plays lead to her junior cap colleague Megan Grantham in the 2Bowl Pairs and their semi-final opposition at 10am comes in the shape of Auchinleck stars Coleen Cowie and Claire Johnston. The other semi at 12.30pm features Carol Stuart and Liz Fraser of Turriff against Mhairi Buchanan and Margaret Hicks of Coatbridge. The final is on Sunday at 10am.
