Edinburgh boxer Lewis Benson couldn’t follow in the footsteps of victorious Lochend team-mate Josh Taylor at the World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan, as he crashed out of the competition after 3-0 defeat by Carl Hield of the Bahamas.

The 69kg fighter has only recently stepped up weight category from his previous discipline of 64kg and was tackling an opponent who secured a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. Benson, 22, battling to secure a place in next year’s Games in Glasgow, tweeted: “It wasn’t to be today. Gave it my all but came up short in a good, close fight! I will be back stronger next time!”
