Boxing: Anderson’s Wembley date suffers knock-out blow as Groves is injured

Edinburgh’s Kenny Anderson has suffered a cruel body blow after his scheduled British 12 stone title challenge against defending supermiddleweight champion George Groves, set to go ahead on Friday at Wembley, was cancelled after the Londoner picked up an injury.

In a statement, promoter Frank Warren confirmed yesterday: “Of course, it’s bitterly disappointing for us and all the boxers involved but in sport injuries occur and there is very little anyone can do about it. Once my team have spoken to Wembley again about a new date I hope that we can get this fight on very soon.’

Groves, 23, was reported to have suffered a toe injury and Anderson, 29, commented: “This is a sad day for boxing and it’s a shame for everyone who had spent money to see a late postponement.”

Anderson has been denied the chance to gain revenge for his defeat to Groves in 2010 and one of the Scot’s sparring partners, Clovenstone club amateur lightheavyweight Pyam Khosrowpour, said: Anderson will be gutted because he told me that he was convinced that he would beat Groves this time around having decked him when only half fit after he took the first fight with Groves (in November 2010) at very short notice.’’
