Lochend boxer Lewis Benson is safely through to next month’s Scottish Championships’ semi-finals after a unanimous victory over Northwest’s Connor Wallace at Ravenscraig Sports Centre on Sunday.

Fighting at his more accustomed weight of 64kg after competing at 69kg in last summer’s Commonwealth Games, Benson picked off his opponent emphatically. Also progressing through their quarter-final bouts from Lochend were Stephen Tiffney (60kg), Lewis Akinlami (75kg) and Tommy Philbin (91kg).

Elsewhere, Craigmillar’s Jason Easton eased his way into the penultimate round of the 64kg competition with a unanimous win over Elgin’s Andrew Smart.

There was success for Leith Victoria’s Ross Welsh in his 81kg quarter-final duel, winning his clash with Lochend’s Andrew Taylor by TKO in round three. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, March 7 at Ravenscraig Sports Centre in Motherwell.

Meanwhile, this year’s youth finals to be held the following day on Sunday, March 8 will feature Meadowbank’s Stephen Murray (49kg); Lochend’s Tylar Gibson (60kg); Craigmillar’s Martin Lawrence (69kg) and Leith Victoria’s Hamman Saddique (49kg) and Connor McCallum (56kg).
