Boxing: Gear change gives Terry 3 of the best

Three is the magic number for coach Terry McCormack after Elias Gear made the switch to Lochend Amateur Boxing Club

McCormack believes that, following Gear’s move from the Kingswells club in Aberdeen, the Lochend club now boast the three top light-welterweights in Scotland.

Gear, who has impressed during several fights in Capital rings prior to his move, joins Josh Taylor and Lewis Benson at the club and McCormack claims: “With Elias Gear now a Lochend boxer I arguably have the three best light-welterweight boxers in Scotland and possibly Britain boxing for our club. Before Gear opted to come here I already had British Olympic light-welterweight contender Josh Taylor and Lewis Benson on our club books so they too will benefit from having Elias as a regular sparmate and Taylor will bring Gear along too with his challenging sparring sessions.”

Gear, who will fight on the Lochend club show on October 21 at the Corn Exchange, said: “I’m thrilled about coming down to Edinburgh to box under Terry McCormack’s guidance at the Lochend gym. There is greater scope for me to develop in Edinburgh than in Aberdeen and I aim to settle here long term. As a fully- qualified fitness instructor I’m hoping to find a job in the city.”
