Edinburgh’s boxers travel west today in hope of securing their spot in the Scottish Championship finals in three weeks.

Lochend are well represented with seven in action at Motherwell’s Ravenscraig Sports Centre this afternoon including Commonwealth Games 69kg star Lewis Benson.

Benson has since moved down weight category to his more accustomed 64kg and is up against Dennistoun McNair’s Craig McIntyre.

Craigmillar’s Jason Easton is also in the 64kg contest, Greenock’s Robbie McKechnie standing in the way of a potential repeat of the 2013 final and all-Edinburgh clash with Benson.

Mathew McHale (52kg), Reehan Ali (56kg), Jade Yapp (Women’s 60kg), Stephen Tiffney (60kg), Lewis Akinlami (75kg) and Tommy Philbin (91kg) complete the strong Lochend contingent.

Meadowbank Boxing Club have their sole representative in Ryan McCutcheon at 56kg, the plucky fighter who narrowly lost out to Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Reece McFadden, in last year’s final at the Emirates Arena.

Elsewhere, Leith Victoria’s Ross Welsh will hope to give a good account of himself in the penultimate round of the 81kg contest, but faces an arduous task to overcome another Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Hayfield’s Stephen Lavelle. And Craigmillar’s Yaseen Senussi will box Livingston’s Adam Saleta for a place in the final of the 91kg+ category.

This year’s youth finals are being held on Sunday at Ravenscraig and feature Meadowbank’s Stephen Murray (49kg); Lochend’s Tylar Gibson (60kg); Craigmillar’s Martin Lawrence (69kg), and Leith Victoria’s Hamman Saddique (49kg) and Connor McCallum (56kg).
