Light welterweight boxer Josh Taylor has hit back at remarks made by opponent Adam Mate after the Hungarian said the Scot will “crumble” in Friday’s showdown at Meadowbank.

The duo go head to head on Cyclone Promotions’ show ‘Lift Off’ in what is Commonwealth Games gold medallist Taylor’s hometown debut after signing his first professional contract with promoter and former world champion, Barry McGuigan, in June.

Taylor, 24, prevailed over Archie Weah with a second-round stoppage in El Paso, Texas, in July in his first paid-ranks bout, but Mate, who is the current Hungarian champion, believes he has the upper hand over the Prestonpans star, having registered 17 wins from 22 bouts since 2011. The Budapest-born boxer told the News last week that “there is going to be a big upset and it is Taylor’s fans that will be in shock”.

Taylor has responded, saying: “I’m glad he’s confident and I’m glad he’s coming to fight. But I’m going to open him up and knock him out, simple as that. I’m not looking for the knock out but I know when I catch him he’s going down. It’s not going to go the six rounds.

“I’ve seen a few videos of him and he looks a lot smaller than me, so I’m going to catch him and put him on the canvas.

“He’s trying to get inside my head, but that’s not going to happen. It’s going to be a good night and I’m going to come out on top – that’s for sure. Obviously anything can happen and he could catch me with a good shot or whatever, you never know, but I’m not going to let that happen.

“He’s got a fair bit of experience over me and has had ten stoppages, so he can punch a bit. I’m not going to be careless so I’ll keep my hands up, but I’ve been sparring with great professionals like Richard Commey who is the lightweight Commonwealth champion, 22 wins with 20 knockouts, so I’ve had great preparation. It couldn’t have gone any better to be honest.”
