Josh Taylor has reassured Scottish boxing fans that his world title defence against Apinun Khongsong at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro will not be his last major fight in Scotland.

Taylor was due to take on his Thai opponent in a mandatory bout at the start of May, but that meeting has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Taylor, who holds the WBA and IBF super light-weight world titles, is widely expected to defeat Khongsong and set up a unification fight with Jose Ramirez, and he is also considering the prospect of stepping up a weight division.

Regardless of his next moves, Taylor’s bouts will carry significant purses and demand from the United States, but Taylor, pictured below, does not think that necessarily means he will not hold those events on home soil.

“Even non-title fights at 147 [pounds] are massive because all the names are up there,” said Taylor. “You’ve got [Keith] Thurman, Shawn Porter, Manny Pacquiao. When we get back to normality, hopefully I become undisputed champion and move up to 147.

“Some of those fights might happen in Scotland and I want to get that Easter Road fight or Tynecastle fight and I want to go up to [Edinburgh] Castle – on the esplanade in the summer, just before or after the Tattoo.

“I want to give the Scottish fans big fights. Obviously I want to go to America and see my name in bright lights at MGM or Madison Square Garden – every fighter dreams of that.”

In an interview with iFL TV, the Prestonpans Puncher added: “It’s exciting times ahead. Hopefully it all goes well, but I might not even fight this year.”
