Meadowbank’s Scottish 56kg champion Lee McGregor remains on course to make it back-to-back national titles after securing his place in next month’s finals with a first-round stoppage of Greenock’s Garry Monkhouse.

McGregor, 20, wasted little time in the ring, unleashing a devastating left hook that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas. The 2018 Commonwealth Games hopeful will now meet Jack Turner of Hayfield Boxing Club at Ravenscraig Sports Complex on Saturday, April 1.

Meanwhile, Leith Victoria’s Junior Burton is on the verge of winning gold after he saw off Stephen Boyle by a split decision. Hayfield’s Nathaniel Collins now stands in his way from winning his first Scottish Elite title. Burton’s stablemate Daniel Gollan is also safely through having taken care of East Lothain’s Gary Fairgrieve in their 91kg+ contest. Gollan now faces the Bronx’s Mitchell Barton.

There was disappointment for Meadowbank’s Sean Spence (64kg), Craigmillar’s Sean Munro (69kg), Lochend’s Sean Eng (69kg), Krystian Bozek (75kg) and Scott Forrest (91kg), who all crashed out at the penultimate stage of the competition.
