Meadowbank’s Lee McGregor won the 56kg gold medal at the Belgrade Winners Tournament last night with victory over Italian Riccardo D’Andrea in the Serbian capital.
It has been a fruitful four weeks for the 19-year-old who won his first Scottish Seniors’ title last month after triumphing over Lochend’s Ryan McCutcheon.
The teenager is one of Scottish boxing’s hottest prospects and underlined that claim with a devastating display against his vastly more experienced opponent.
McGregor looked to have wrapped things up in the second round when he dropped the Italian to the canvas with a right hand, but the bell saved D’Andrea for the time being.
However, McGregor remained composed throughout the third and final round en route to a comfortable points victory.
Meanwhile, undefeated professional Josh Taylor could be on the verge of fighting in New York this summer after it was announced Cyclone stable-mate and current IBF super bantamweight world champion, Carl Frampton, will box Mexican Leo Santa Cruz in the city for the WBA super world featherweight title. However, a date is still to be confirmed.
