Taylor in last-round flurry

jOSH TAYLOR began his campaign to qualify for the British Olympic boxing team in sound fashion when he beat Miroslav Serban of the Czech Republic 15-6 on points.

The Prestonpans lightweight was 5-2 ahead after the first round in the qualifying tournament in Trabzon, Turkey. The second round was even at three points each but in the final round, Taylor pulled clear for an emphatic win.

Two other British lightweights, Joe Cordina of Wales and Sam Maxwell of England, made it safely through to the second stage with wins over David Joyce of Ireland – who retired – and Albert Selimov of Russia respectively.

n EDINBURGH boxer Kenny Anderson will fight George Groves for the British super-middleweight title on Saturday, June 30. The pair had been due to clash at Wembley Arena last month before the Londoner pulled out with a back injury.
